Most RV owners check tread depth, air pressure, and age — then assume a tire with plenty of tread is a safe tire. That assumption is exactly what causes blowouts on the highway.
RV tires live a strange life: they sit parked for weeks or months at a time, often in full sun, then get asked to carry a 10,000-pound rig at 65 mph for a weekend. The parked months are the problem. During those weeks, ultraviolet radiation and ozone attack the rubber compound itself — a chemical breakdown that has nothing to do with how much tread is left. The visible result is "dry rot": fine cracks in the sidewall that grow until the carcass can no longer hold air or load.
Tire industry guidance from NHTSA and leading manufacturers is blunt: tires should be inspected annually after five years and replaced at ten years regardless of tread depth. For RVs, the math is worse than for cars, because a parked RV's tires are exposed to UV and ozone full-time while a daily-driven car's tires are shaded and moving most of their life. In practice, that means a set of RV tires can age out in six to eight years even with half their tread remaining — and sidewall cracks are one of the most common causes of RV roadside failures.
A tire cover doesn't stop chemical aging — nothing does. But it does the next best thing: it removes the two biggest accelerators (direct UV and surface ozone exposure), and it cushions the sidewall against the weather. Three-layer tire covers are built specifically for that job.
Tire rubber is a polymer compound held together by chemical bonds. UV radiation and ozone attack those bonds from the surface inward. You can't see most of the damage — you can only see its end stage.

The test you can do at home: look at a tire that has sat uncovered in the sun for two summers versus one that has been covered. The uncovered tire shows the classic signs — chalky surface, hairline cracks between tread blocks, dull sidewalls. The covered tire still looks new. It's the same rubber; the difference is sun exposure.
Not all tire covers are equal. A thin single-layer nylon sleeve stops some dust and a little UV, but it flaps in the wind, lets rain through the weave, and does nothing for the sidewall. The covers that actually protect a parked RV are built with three layers, each with a distinct job:

One spec that separates quality from cheap: ventilation. A cover that traps moisture against the tire can create the very problem it's supposed to prevent — humid air condensing under the cover, day after day. Good 3-layer covers use breathable inner layers and vented construction so air circulates while water stays out.
Sizing a tire cover is simple once you know the mounted diameter of your tire — the wheel size plus the tire's sidewall height on both sides. You can measure it directly with a tape measure across the mounted tire, or read it off the sidewall markings:
Diameter (inches) = wheel diameter + 2 × (width × aspect ratio) ÷ 25.4
Example: an ST235/80R16 tire = 16 + 2 × (235 × 0.80) ÷ 25.4 ≈ 30.8" mounted diameter → a 31" cover.

1. Do tire covers really prevent dry rot? They prevent the accelerated aging that UV and ozone cause — which is most of it. Covers block direct sun and limit ozone exposure, the two biggest drivers of sidewall cracking. They can't stop chemical aging entirely (no cover can), which is why tires should still be inspected annually and replaced at the manufacturer-recommended age. What a good 3-layer cover does is add years to that timeline.
2. How do I measure my RV tire for a cover? Measure the mounted tire's diameter straight across the center with a tape measure, or calculate it from the sidewall: wheel diameter + 2 × (width × aspect ratio) ÷ 25.4. An ST235/80R16, for example, is about 31" and takes a 31" cover. When in doubt, round up.
3. Can I leave tire covers on while driving? No. Tire covers are for parking and storage. They're not rated for road speeds and can come loose or trap heat while driving. Covers go on when the rig stops and come off before you roll.
4. Should I cover tires that are stored indoors? It's optional but useful. Indoor storage still has dust, temperature swings, and light — an L1 or L2 cover keeps tires clean and cushions them against accidental contact. For heated, dark storage, a simple soft cover is all you need.
5. What's the difference between a tire cover and a wheel cover? A wheel cover protects the rim and hub (and often the spare tire mount), while a tire cover protects the rubber — the part that actually fails. If you're worried about dry rot and blowouts, the tire cover is the priority. Many rigs use both: a spare tire cover on the rear carrier and tire covers on the axles.
